      Abstract

Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), defined as loss of normal ovarian functions before the age of 40 years, occurs in at least 1% of all women. POI not only affects the reproductive system but also causes many health problems and psychological stress. Abnormal serum lipid profile leads to cardiovascular diseases that are strongly associated with the mortality of POI. To date, several studies have examined the levels of different serum lipids in patients with POI. However, the results are either inconclusive or inconsistent. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to measure whether serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglyceride (TG) are varied in POI patients. Ten published articles in total were included in this meta-analysis involving 1009 individuals: 458 POI patients and 551 controls. Our analysis results showed that serum TC, LDL-C, and TG levels were significantly higher in POI patients when compared with healthy controls. However, serum HDL-C levels were not varied significantly between controls and POI patients. These results suggest that elevations in unfavorable lipids may contribute to the high risk of cardiovascular diseases that are observed in patients with POI.
