Future challenges for clinical embryologists

      In parallel with the ever-increasing demand for IVF treatments, the development and introduction of new technologies in the laboratory presents ongoing challenges. Accordingly, the role of the clinical embryologist has changed profoundly over time. The embryologist has always been considered a highly skilled 'artisan of life', extensively trained to master sensitive microscale procedures where the margin for error is close to zero. The development of early techniques in assisted reproductive technology (ART), such as sperm preparation for intrauterine insemination, was quite simple. However, the widespread introduction of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and thereafter in more recent years further sophisticated and invasive techniques, such as the vitrification of gametes or embryos and embryo biopsy for genetic testing, presented additional challenges in the daily routine of an IVF laboratory (
